Weight loss injections - what you need to know

ree

I've been having a lot of conversations with people recently about weight loss injections.  Either because they've used them and they're now thinking about how they can maintain their results when they come off the drugs, or because they have friends who are using them.

Some people online are raving about how it’s changed their life. Others are feeling grim; exhausted, nauseous, and constantly bloated. And then there’s the other camp: people warning that as soon as you stop, the weight piles back on.

Here’s the truth: all of those things can be true. This medication can help. It can reduce hunger. It can lead to weight loss. However, it’s not a miracle cure. And if you’re not careful, the cost isn’t just financial, it’s your energy, your digestion, your mental health, and yes… your results.

As a health coach, I believe it's crucial to keep you informed about these treatments and how they might affect your health journey. Here are some key points to consider:

How GLP-1 medications work: These medications mimic a hormone your body naturally produces to regulate appetite and blood sugar. They can significantly suppress appetite, which is why some users describe the effect as ‘calming the food noise’.

Potential benefits: Some users lose 15-20% of their body weight over a year. These medications can also help stabilise blood sugar levels, which is particularly beneficial for those with insulin resistance.

Important considerations:

Side effects: Common ones include nausea, constipation, headaches, and fatigue. More serious issues, like muscle loss or gallbladder problems, may occur in some cases.

Nutrient deficiencies: The appetite-suppressing effects can lead to inadequate nutrient intake.

Long-term use: Weight regain is common after stopping the injections. Without established healthy habits, clients typically regain around 75% of the weight lost.

If you're considering or currently using these medications, I'm here to support you. I can help by:

  • Building healthier routines around food, movement, and self-care

  • Encouraging mindful eating and greater awareness of hunger and fullness

  • Supporting behaviour changes that make healthy choices easier and more sustainable

  • Offering accountability, encouragement, and strategies to stay on track

Remember, these medications are not a magic fix. They work best when combined with a nourishing diet, regular physical activity, and healthy lifestyle habits.
